The University of Siena dates back to 1240 and is one of Europe’s oldest institutions of higher education. Today, UNISI has over 16,000 students enrolled in a wide range of degree programmes, including bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees and single-cycle degrees. In 2021, UNISI ranked second among medium-sized Italian universities in terms of scholarships and student services, according to the 2021 CENSIS research institute classification. UNISI aims to be a global university capable of welcoming an increasing number of international students. UNISI recruits about 10% of its students from abroad and offers teaching programmes entirely in English. The recent establishment of several double degrees, the increased mobility of students (both in terms of study and internships), staff and faculty, and the active participation in international higher education networks represent further relevant actions in UNISI’s internationalisation strategy.

ESN Italy, born in 1994, is the Italian branch of the Erasmus Student Network, the largest organisation of student volunteers in Europe. ESN Italy’s mission is to foster the enrichment of society through international students and to do this; we support the development of student mobility programmes in 46 Italian cities with 53 Local Sections and more than 2000 volunteers who work according to the Students Helping Students principle. Our volunteers take care of the approximately 30,000 Erasmus students who choose Italy annually as the destination for their study abroad experience, organising numerous cultural, recreational, sporting, and social activities.
The organisation develops recreational, cultural, social, sporting and civic activities in different areas, such as environmental sustainability, social inclusion, health and well-being, culture, employability education and youth. These activities aim to facilitate the integration of international students into the different local communities, offer help whenever needed to make all integration processes more accessible and provide the best possible mobility experience. At the same time, it provides an intercultural experience for those who cannot access a period abroad (‘internationalisation at home’) and plays a crucial role in the reintegration of students who have returned from their mobility period.
