Elcra Project

ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY IN
HIGHER EDUCATION CONTEXT FOR PREVENTING
VIOLENT RADICALIZATION
IN CLIMATE ACTIVISM

Co Funded by the EU

The project

The project aims to understand students’ attitudes and opinions on the issue of environmental sustainability and the fight against climate change, studying the phenomenon of youth participation in environmental activism movements as a preventive measure against radicalisation phenomena that can lead to violence. From this data and research base, the project intends to contribute to developing theories and methods valid to support communities in their active commitment to the green transition.
Project Background

In recent years, movements have spread that represent, for many young people, especially university students, a form of activism and peaceful protest related to environmental sustainability issues and the fight against climate change.

GENERAL OBJECTIVE

The project aims to increase students’ environmental literacy, particularly university students, by involving them in their communities and transforming them into actors of change.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

To understand the phenomenon of violent radicalisation linked to environmental and climate challenges through qualitative and quantitative research on emblematic cases, attitudes and opinions of university students on environmental sustainability

The results

The project will promote the environmental literacy of university students, developing their knowledge and skills and creating a link between them and the community they are part of and increase their interest in and knowledge about climate change issues.

The project will provide participants with an understanding of the complexity of environmental and social systems and strong problem-solving skills, through which they will be able to intervene in systems with innovative and effective solutions that contribute to combating climate change and environmental sustainability problems while preventing violent radicalisation.

The project will promote the professional development of the participants through the creation of a community of practice on the theme of preventing violent radicalisation in environmental activism; the project will unite the contributions of different actors (academics, students, third sector realities), enhancing the impact of actions to prevent violent radicalisation in environmental activism and combating climate change.

Our ELCRA partner meeting in Rome, 09/10/2026 brought the whole consortium together around one table, with colleagues from Italy, Spain, Poland, Lithuania and Portugal. 💚
We took stock of the research carried out so far, shared updates on each work package, and planned the next steps for the project: from the ECO-Literacy Framework to the COIL course connecting students across Europe. 🎓

What we value most about moments like this is the people: universities, youth organisations and students working side by side to bring environmental literacy into higher education and to prevent violent radicalisation in climate activism. 🌿

Thank you to everyone who took part, and to our partners @Università di Siena, @OpenCom Italy, @Universidad Complutense de Madrid, @Uniwersytet Jagielloński, @Klaipėda University, @Universidade de Coimbra, @ESN Italia and @ESN Portugal. 🙌

On 9 October, we gathered at Europe Experience – David Sassoli in Rome, and online via livestream, to close the ELCRA journey with a conversation about environmental literacy, young people and Europe’s commitment to the climate. 💚

We presented the ELCRA project alongside other KA2 projects, shared our Policy Paper and the European commitment behind it, listened to the Italian perspective, and gave space to the voices of young people.

A special thank you to

🎤 Alessia Ricci (@INDIRE), Communication Officer and Green Contact Point, for showing how Erasmus+ supports the green transition, from green travel to KA2 projects
🎤 Mattia Lolli (@Legambiente), Volunteer Coordinator, for presenting Legambiente’s work and Italy’s path on environmental sustainability, and for closing with a hopeful message that sparked a great dialogue with participants
🏛️ Europe Experience – David Sassoli, for hosting us in such a meaningful and fitting place
🤝 Our partners and their students @Università di Siena, @OpenCom Italy, @Universidad Complutense de Madrid, @Uniwersytet Jagielloński, @Klaipėda University, @Universidade de Coimbra, @ESN Italia and @ESN Portugal
