Elcra Project
ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY IN
HIGHER EDUCATION CONTEXT FOR
PREVENTING
VIOLENT RADICALIZATION IN CLIMATE ACTIVISM
O Projeto
ANTECEDENTES DO PROJETO
Social
ELCRA is an Erasmus+ project that promotes environmental literacy as a means of preventing radicalisation in climate activism. Its COIL programme connects students from five European universities in a collaborative online learning experience built around five thematic modules, each led by a different partner.
The module coordinated by the University of Coimbra starts from a question that rarely features in environmental debates: what role does the law actually play in driving the transition to a circular economy?
Students work through a range of legal instruments — from taxation and certification schemes to sanctions and incentive mechanisms — learning not just what they are, but how to explain them. Their output is a set of gamified learning materials designed to make regulation legible and relevant to communities and individuals who rarely see themselves as part of the legal conversation.

The ELCRA project — funded under Erasmus+ — explores the relationship between environmental literacy and the risk of radicalisation in climate activism. Through its COIL programme, students from five European universities work together online, each cohort tackling a distinct theme under the guidance of a partner university.
Climate change does not only produce data. It produces feelings: anxiety about the future, a sense of helplessness, but also anger and, for some, a powerful drive to act. The module coordinated by Jagiellonian University in Kraków asks what happens next. How do those emotions translate into behaviour? When do they become a resource — and when might they fuel something more dangerous?
Working in international groups, students design peer-focused workshops that translate theories of change into concrete, actionable interventions. By the end of the module, each group leaves with a workshop ready to deliver to fellow students.

ELCRA is an Erasmus+ project promoting environmental literacy as a tool for preventing radicalisation in climate activism. Its COIL programme brings students from five European universities together online to tackle real challenges around sustainability and civic engagement — each through a dedicated thematic module.
The module coordinated by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid opens with a straightforward question: what does sustainability actually mean in practice? Who governs it, who communicates it, and who carries its costs?
Working in international teams, students examine how media, institutions, brands, and individuals either support or undermine sustainable practices in everyday life. Their collective output is an educational resource designed to help younger audiences understand the connections between consumption, environmental governance, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Not an academic exercise. A product with a purpose.

ELCRA is an Erasmus+ project working on the prevention of radicalisation in climate activism through environmental literacy, bringing together five European universities and two student organisations. One of its most distinctive training tools is the COIL — a Collaborative Online International Learning programme that gathers students from five countries in a single shared virtual space.
COIL is not simply about delivering content online. It is a methodology that places cultural diversity at the centre of the learning experience, treating difference as a resource rather than a logistical challenge.
Within ELCRA, the COIL marks the moment when students move from passive learners to active co-creators — applying knowledge gained through the project's MOOC to real challenges in sustainability and responsible climate engagement.
Five modules. Five themes. Five universities. Over the coming posts, we look at each one.
